When Wind or Snow Brings a Tree Down
Emergency storm tree service in Reno usually follows wind. The valley is windy year-round, winter storms can bring much stronger gusts, and the December 2014 storm reached 71 mph at Reno-Tahoe International Airport while falling trees and branches knocked out power to about 11,000 customers. Wet spring or fall snow on trees still in leaf can do similar damage. When a tree or a big limb comes down on a house, a car, a fence or across the driveway, the job is to make it safe first and clean up second.
First, stay safe
- Stay out from under hanging or cracked limbs, even small ones; they can fall without warning.
- If any part of a tree is touching a wire, treat the wire as live. Keep everyone back and call NV Energy before anything else.
- Do not climb onto a roof with a tree on it. The tree may be holding weight that shifts as it is cut.
- If a tree has broken through a roof or wall and the house is not safe, leave it.
- Take photos of the damage from a safe spot before anything is moved; your insurance company will want them.
What we do on a storm call
You can call (775) 600-6504 any time to leave details, and storm calls are worked in order of danger: trees on occupied houses, blocked exits and driveways first, then trees on fences, sheds and yards. On site, we look at how the tree is loaded before making any cut. A trunk lying on a roof can be under tension, and the first cuts are made to relieve that load without letting the tree roll or drop onto the structure. Pieces are lifted or lowered off the roof rather than pushed. Once the weight is off, the rest of the tree is cut up, the brush chipped and the wood stacked or hauled.
Trees on lines and in the street
Anything involving power lines, including the service line to your house, waits for NV Energy to make it safe. After a major wind or winter storm, City of Reno crews may clear obstructions from streets and the right-of-way regardless of ownership and may pick up limbs in the street. Trees and limbs on your own property are yours to deal with.
The tree that didn't fall
After a storm, look at the trees that are still standing. A fresh crack at a fork, a tree that now leans with the soil heaved up on the far side, or a large limb hung up in the crown are all signs the next wind could finish the job. Those are worth a quick look while the crew is already there, and they are usually much easier to deal with standing than lying on your roof.
Call (775) 600-6504 with your address, what fell and what it is on. Photos help us bring the right gear.
What Storm Work Covers
Priced once we can see the damage; you approve the scope before cleanup goes beyond making it safe.
Trees on roofs and structures
Removing trunks and limbs from a house, garage or shed in controlled pieces so the structure is not damaged further.
Blocked driveways and walkways
Cutting and clearing trees that block a driveway, gate or entry.
Hanging and split limbs
Taking down broken limbs caught in the crown and cracked stems that could still fall.
Uprooted and leaning trees
Removing trees that have tipped or pulled their roots up and are no longer stable.
Storm debris cleanup
Chipping brush and hauling or stacking wood after the danger is gone.

What Emergency Storm Tree Service Usually Costs
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Emergency tree removal (Lawn Love, national) | $450 to $3,000 |
| Fallen tree already on the ground (Lawn Love, national) | $90 to $300 |
| Medium tree removal, Reno (Homeyou) | $552 to $748 |
| Hard-to-reach tree, Reno (Homeyou) | up to about $1,200 |
Ranges from Lawn Love's tree removal guide (October 2026) and Homeyou's Reno guide (2026). A tree on a roof or tangled with other trees costs more than one lying in the yard. Many homeowner's policies cover removal of a tree that hits an insured structure; check your policy. Your written estimate is the price.
How a Storm Call Works
1. Call with the details
Address, what fell, what it is on and whether wires are involved. Photos if you can take them safely.
2. Secure the area
Weight is taken off roofs and structures and hanging limbs brought down, after any lines are cleared by NV Energy.
3. Agree the cleanup
You get a written price for the rest of the work: cutting up, chipping, hauling and any stump.
4. Clean up and check
Debris cleared, and the trees still standing looked over for new cracks or lean.

Emergency Storm Tree Service Questions
A tree fell on my power line. What should I do?
Keep everyone, including pets, well away from the tree and the line, and call NV Energy right away. Do not touch the tree or try to cut it. Once NV Energy has made the line safe, we can remove the tree.
Will my insurance pay for storm tree removal?
Many homeowner's policies cover removing a tree that falls on an insured structure such as the house or a fence, often up to a set limit, but usually not a tree that falls in the open yard without hitting anything. Check your policy and call your agent; our written quote and your photos help with the claim.
Does the City of Reno clean up fallen trees?
After a major storm, city crews may clear obstructions from streets and the right-of-way and pick up limbs in the street. Trees and limbs on private property are the owner's responsibility.
Can you come right away?
You can call (775) 600-6504 at any time to leave details, and storm calls are handled in order of danger. After a big wind event, many people call at once, so trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
How do I know if a tree is about to fall after a storm?
Look for new cracks at forks or in the trunk, a fresh lean, soil or lawn lifted on the side away from the lean, and broken limbs hanging in the crown. Any of those means the tree should be looked at before the next wind.
