Space, Wind and Elevation
Golden Valley is small and spread out. The 2020 Census counted 1,580 people on 3.61 square miles, about 437 per square mile, which is a fraction of the density of the neighborhoods closer to Reno. More room per house tends to mean more trees per lot, from rows planted along property lines to single big shade trees that have had decades to grow. Tree Service in Golden Valley usually involves several trees at once, and we plan the visit that way.
The highest of the three north valleys
Golden Valley sits at about 5,135 feet, a little higher than Lemmon Valley (about 4,990 feet) and Sun Valley (about 4,725 feet). Elevation brings colder nights, a shorter growing season, and wind that crosses open ground. Trees here grow more slowly than they would in town, and branches that grow fast after a wet year are often weakly attached. Wind and snow find those limbs first.
Rows of trees along the property line
On larger lots, owners often planted a row of evergreens or poplars along a fence for privacy and wind protection. Those rows age together. When one tree in a row dies, the neighbors on each side are suddenly exposed to wind they never had to handle, and they sometimes fail next. Before removing one tree from a row, we look at the ones beside it and tell you what to expect.
Brush, junipers and fire
The hills around the North Valleys are sagebrush, rabbitbrush and scattered juniper, the same materials Truckee Meadows Fire collects at its free green waste days for Washoe County residents. Reno Fire's defensible space guidance asks for tree limbs to be raised at least 6 feet in the zone 5 to 30 feet from a house, and for branches to stay 10 feet from a chimney or roof. Those are sound targets in Golden Valley too, and we can do that limbing and thinning in the same trip as other tree work.
Part of a larger area until 2010
Before the 2010 Census, Golden Valley was counted together with Lemmon Valley in a single census-designated place. It lies about seven miles north of downtown Reno, with Lemmon Valley directly to the north, and shares the 89506 ZIP code with its neighbor. We work across both valleys.

Golden Valley Questions
One tree in my windbreak row died. Do the others need to go too?
Not necessarily. We look at the neighbors on each side for decay and lean, since they will now take more wind. Sometimes they are fine; sometimes thinning or shortening them makes sense.
How high should I limb up my pines near the house?
Reno Fire's guidance is at least 6 feet off the ground within 30 feet of the house, and more on bigger trees, without removing more than about a third of the tree's height in live crown. We set the height tree by tree.
Can you handle several trees in one visit?
Yes, and on Golden Valley lots that is common. A single trip for several trees is usually more efficient than separate visits, and the written estimate breaks out each tree so you can choose.
Is a dead evergreen in my yard a fire hazard or just an eyesore?
Both. A dead conifer keeps its dry needles for a while and burns hot, and it also loses strength as the wood dries and decays. If it stands within about 30 feet of the house or can reach a fence, shed or power line when it falls, plan to have it removed soon rather than waiting for a windy day to do it for you.
