Steep, Small and Right on the Lake
Crystal Bay is one of the smallest places we work: 337 residents in 2020, on about 0.45 square miles of land against the California state line. It is also one of the steepest. Elevation runs from about 6,229 feet at the lakeshore to more than 6,800 feet, which means most homes sit on a slope with trees above and below them. Tree Service in Crystal Bay is planned around where wood will go once it is cut.
The lakeshore rule
TRPA's tree permit threshold is normally 14 inches in diameter at breast height. For a lakeshore property, trees between the house and the lake drop to a 6-inch threshold, so even a modest pine on the water side needs a permit before removal. Any vegetation work in the backshore or in a stream environment zone needs TRPA review no matter the size. On a lakefront lot, we identify which trees fall under which rule before we write the estimate.
Gravity and access
On a steep lot, a falling limb does not stop where it lands. It rolls. Most Crystal Bay removals are done by climbing and lowering sections on ropes, with the rigging set so pieces come down slowly to a controlled landing spot. Access matters as much as the tree; narrow roads and tight driveways limit where a chipper or truck can park, and sometimes brush has to be carried uphill to the road. The estimate accounts for that.
Fire inspections and chipping
Crystal Bay is served by the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, the same district as Incline Village. It offers defensible space inspections and a residential curbside chipping program, and its evaluators can issue TRPA permits for defensible space removals. The chipping program is for residents' own work, not for contractor debris, so on our jobs we handle the chipping and hauling ourselves.
Across the line is California
Crystal Bay sits right at the state line, with Kings Beach, California, just to the west along State Route 28. Rules, permits and fire agencies change at that line. We work on the Nevada side, and if your property or a tree straddles the line, we will tell you before anything is scheduled.
Crystal Bay services
- Permit sorting for lakeshore and upland trees
- Sectional removals on steep lots, with controlled lowering
- Defensible space limbing near decks, roofs and chimneys
- Removing dead conifers before they fall
- Brush carry-out, chipping and haul-away
Snow and ice on the north shore
North shore winters are long, and the basin gets most of its precipitation as snow between November and April. Heavy, wet snow bends limbs over roofs and decks and can split multi-stemmed trees. Pruning that keeps branches 10 feet clear of chimneys and structures also keeps snow from dumping off a branch onto the deck below.

About Crystal Bay
- Tiny and steep. Crystal Bay had 337 residents in 2020 on about 0.45 square miles of land, rising from about 6,229 feet at the lakeshore to over 6,800 feet.
- Lakeshore threshold. TRPA requires a permit to remove trees larger than 6 inches DBH between a lakeshore house and the lake, and larger than 14 inches elsewhere on the lot.
- Fire district. The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District offers defensible space inspections and curbside chipping to Crystal Bay and Incline Village residents.
- Separate since 2010. Before 2010 the Census Bureau counted Crystal Bay within the Incline Village-Crystal Bay CDP; the community is adjacent to the California state line.

Crystal Bay Questions
My pine is only 8 inches across. Do I still need a permit?
If it stands between your house and the lake on a lakeshore lot, yes; the threshold there is 6 inches. Elsewhere on the lot, a live tree under 14 inches generally does not need a TRPA permit.
How do you keep logs from rolling down the slope?
We lower sections on ropes to a planned landing spot and cut them small there. Nothing is dropped freely on a steep Crystal Bay lot.
Can the fire district inspect my property first?
Yes. North Lake Tahoe Fire offers defensible space inspections, and its evaluators can issue permits for trees that need to be removed for fire safety. Many owners do that first and then call us with the list.
Is there a best time of year for tree work in Crystal Bay?
Snow limits access from late fall into spring on many steep lots, so most removals happen from late spring through fall. Defensible space work is best finished early in the season, before fire danger peaks. Dead trees that threaten a house should not wait for a season.
