A Mixed Community on US 50
Mound House is the first community in Lyon County as you head east from Carson City on US 50, on the way to Dayton. It grew in the 1800s along the Carson River route and the Comstock boom, gained a railroad station in 1871 and a post office in 1877, and still has active gypsum operations that date to around 1900. Tree Service in Mound House works in that mix of homes, small businesses and industrial land, usually on dry, open lots.
A railroad crossroads
In 1880 the Carson and Colorado Railway made Mound House a transfer depot between rail gauges, linking to the Virginia and Truckee. Traffic moved away after a Southern Pacific branch let freight bypass the V&T in 1905, and the rail lines were abandoned in the 1930s. The town that remains is spread out, with homes on larger parcels between commercial and industrial sites.
Dry ground, tough trees
At about 4,974 feet, in the hills between Carson City and Dayton, Mound House is high desert. Trees that do well here are drought-tolerant, and many yards rely on a few established shade trees or windbreak rows that were watered heavily when young. When a well or irrigation schedule changes, those trees often show it within a summer or two as thinning crowns and dead branch tips. Removing dead wood promptly keeps it from falling on vehicles, sheds and fences.
Brush and fire
The hills around Mound House are open and brushy, and wind moves through the Carson River corridor freely. Clearing dead brush and raising tree limbs within about 30 feet of buildings is the most useful defensible space work on these properties. We chip what we cut so it does not become fuel again.
Disposal through Central Lyon County
Mound House residents were among those eligible for Central Lyon County Fire's green waste dump day on June 14, 2025, at 1135 Spruce Avenue in Silver Springs. It accepted tree limbs, branches, yard clippings and brush with no load limit, but not treated wood, trash or construction debris. If you are cutting brush yourself, it is worth watching for the next one.
Commercial and industrial lots
Because Mound House mixes homes with businesses, we also get calls for trees along commercial frontage and around yards and storage lots. The same rules apply: plan the drop zone, protect what is underneath, and keep the work off the highway right-of-way. For anything near US 50 itself, the road and its shoulders are not private property, so we confirm the line before cutting.

Mound House Questions
My windbreak trees are dying from the top down. Can they be saved?
Sometimes. Top dieback in a dry setting often points to water stress. If the lower crown is still healthy, pruning out the dead tops and improving watering can help. Trees that are mostly dead are better removed before they fall.
Can you work on a commercial lot in Mound House?
Yes. We handle trees on business and mixed-use properties the same way as residential ones, with a written quote and a plan for traffic and parking.
Where can I take branches I cut myself?
Central Lyon County Fire has run green waste dump days open to Mound House residents. Check their announcements for the next date and what is accepted.
Do I need a permit from Lyon County to remove a tree on my property?
For an ordinary tree on private residential property, we are not aware of a Lyon County permit requirement. Confirm the property line if the tree is near US 50 or another road, and call NV Energy first if the tree is anywhere near a power line.
