Forest Trees, Not Just Yard Trees
Verdi is on the western edge of the Reno area, against the California state line and in the shadow of the Verdi Range. Trees are bigger here, lots are often wooded, and much of our Tree Service work in Verdi is about the relationship between those trees and the house: how close they are, how much fuel is under them, and what happens if one comes down in a storm.
The Gold Ranch Fire
On August 11, 2024, a car fire on eastbound I-80 near Gold Ranch spread into the hills around Verdi. Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue said about 400 homes were threatened, the fire grew to roughly 674 acres, and one home near the Truckee River was lost. Crews were working pockets of timber and mahogany. NV Energy shut off lines during the fire, and Verdi Elementary canceled classes. For many Verdi owners, that week turned defensible space from a someday project into a this-year project.
What defensible space work involves
On a wooded Verdi lot, we usually start within 30 feet of the house: remove dead trees, take off branches within 10 feet of the roof and chimney, and raise lower limbs so a ground fire cannot climb into the crowns. Reno Fire's guidance suggests roughly 10 feet between the canopies of Jeffrey pine and white fir, with more spacing on steep slopes. Farther out, we thin crowded small trees and brush. None of it requires clearing the lot bare; well-spaced, healthy trees are part of a defensible property.
Steep ground and tall trees
Removing a tall pine on a slope above a house is a technical job. Often the tree has to be climbed and taken down in sections, with each piece lowered on a rope. Sometimes a crane is the safest way to lift sections clear of a roof. We look at the slope, the access and the targets underneath before choosing a method, and the written quote says which one we plan to use.
History on the line
The community was first known as O'Neil's Crossing, after a man who built a bridge there in 1860. In 1868 Charles Crocker of the Central Pacific drew the name Verdi from a hat, after the composer. Two years later, on November 4, 1870, a train headed for Virginia City carrying about $60,000 in gold and silver was stopped and robbed near town. In 2008, an earthquake swarm of more than 5,000 small quakes shook the area from February to June.
Green waste days
Truckee Meadows Fire's fall 2025 collection included a self-service Verdi/Mogul day at Mayberry Park, 101 Woodland Avenue, on October 19. It is a resident program for natural vegetation only, with no stumps over 8 inches across.

Verdi Questions
Do I have to cut down healthy pines for defensible space?
Usually not. The aim is spacing and separation: dead trees out, lower limbs raised, crowded small trees thinned, and no branches over the roof. Healthy, well-spaced trees can stay.
Do you work on the California side of Verdi?
Our Verdi work is on the Nevada side. California has its own licensing and permit rules, so we keep to Washoe County properties.
How do you remove a big pine above a house on a slope?
Usually by climbing it and lowering it in sections on ropes, so nothing falls freely toward the house. When there is room to set up, a crane can lift sections clear. We choose after seeing the site.
My pines turned orange from the top down. Is that beetles?
Often, yes. Bark beetles usually attack trees already weakened by drought, crowding or root damage, and the crown fades from green to yellow to red over a season. Once a pine is fully red it is dead and drying, and on a wooded Verdi lot it should come down before it becomes a fall or fire hazard. Neighboring trees are worth a look at the same time.
