Working in a Narrow Canyon Town
Gold Hill sits about a mile and a half south of Virginia City, along the boundary between Storey and Lyon counties, on the southern section of the Comstock Lode. Its population peaked at about 8,000 in 1877; by 2005 it was about 191. What is left is a small community of homes and historic buildings on steep ground, and Tree Service in Gold Hill is shaped by that terrain and that history.
Part of the Comstock Historic District
Gold Hill is within the Comstock Historic District, along with Virginia City and Silver City. The Comstock Historic District Commission issues Certificates of Appropriateness for exterior work, retaining walls, fencing and similar projects. If a tree is pushing against a historic wall or a stump sits next to an old foundation, we recommend checking with the commission before removing it, because the wall repair may need approval even if the tree work does not.
Historic landmarks to work around
The Gold Hill Hotel dates to 1861. The restored Gold Hill depot of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad is one of the few wooden structures in the region to survive the 1875 Virginia City fire, and the Gold Hill Historical Society was formed in 1994 to preserve it. The rebuilt heritage railroad reached Gold Hill again in 1992. Trees near structures like these are pruned and removed slowly, with lowering lines and careful staging, so nothing hits a building that cannot be replaced.
Steep lots and loose ground
Much of Gold Hill is hillside, and a lot of it has been dug, cut and filled since the 1860s. Roots on that kind of ground are sometimes shallow or exposed, and a tree that has lost soil on its downhill side can lean over a road or house. We look at root exposure and soil movement as part of every assessment here, and we tell you plainly if a tree's anchorage worries us.
Mining history underfoot
In April 1869 a fire that began in the Yellow Jacket mine spread underground to the Kentuck and Crown Point and killed 37 miners. The ground beneath Gold Hill is laced with old workings. That rarely affects pruning, but it is a reason we prefer stump grinding to digging out root balls, and why we ask about any known shafts or soft spots on a property before bringing heavy equipment onto it.
Gold Hill work
- Pruning trees back from historic roofs and walls
- Rigging and lowering removals on steep lots
- Assessing trees with exposed or undermined roots
- Stump grinding rather than excavation
- Clearing snow and wind damage
Small jobs welcome
In a community this size, many jobs are one or two trees. That is fine with us. We can schedule a Gold Hill visit alongside work in Virginia City or Silver City, and the written quote covers exactly the trees you ask about.

- Underground fire. An April 1869 fire in the Yellow Jacket mine spread to the Kentuck and Crown Point mines and killed 37 miners.

Gold Hill Questions
Can you remove a tree next to the old stone wall on my property?
Yes, carefully, and usually by taking the tree down in pieces and grinding the stump instead of pulling it. If the wall itself will need repair afterward, check with the Comstock Historic District Commission first.
Why not just dig the stump out?
Digging disturbs more ground, which matters next to old foundations and on hillside fill. Grinding removes the stump below grade with far less disturbance.
Do you come out for just one tree?
Yes. Many Gold Hill jobs are one or two trees, and we often pair them with nearby Comstock work.
Will heavy snow damage the trees near my house?
It can, especially on evergreens with long horizontal limbs and on any tree that has leafed out before a late storm. Thinning dense crowns and shortening long limbs over roofs reduces the load. After a big storm, look for split leaders and hanging limbs before walking under the tree.
