Small Place, Tight Work Areas

Mogul is compact: 1,258 people on about 1.46 square miles, or roughly 865 per square mile, just off Interstate 80 about six miles west of downtown Reno. Homes sit closer together than they do in Verdi to the west, and that changes how we approach Tree Service in Mogul. There is rarely room to fell a tree in one piece, so most removals are done in sections with ropes and a ground crew controlling each piece.

Working between houses

When a tree stands between two houses, the job starts with a plan for where every limb goes. We tie off and lower sections instead of dropping them, protect fences and roofs with careful rigging, and keep the street and driveways open for neighbors. If work has to happen over a neighbor's yard, we recommend talking with them before the crew arrives; it makes the day go better for everyone.

The 2008 earthquakes

Mogul was at the center of the 2008 earthquake swarm on Reno's west side. More than 5,000 quakes were recorded between February and June, including a magnitude 5.0 mainshock on April 26, 2008. Earthquakes do not usually knock down healthy trees, but they are a reminder that this end of the valley sits against the mountains. Trees on slopes and cut banks above homes deserve a periodic look for leaning or exposed roots.

Fire and the forest edge

Mogul sits between Reno's western neighborhoods and the more wooded country toward Verdi. The same defensible space practices apply here: dead material out of the first five feet around the house, limbs raised at least 6 feet within 30 feet, and branches kept 10 feet from roofs and chimneys. Those are Reno Fire's numbers, and they make a good checklist for any yard on the west side.

Brush disposal on the west side

Truckee Meadows Fire's fall 2025 green waste program included a self-service Verdi/Mogul day at Mayberry Park, 101 Woodland Avenue, on October 19, and the City of Reno scheduled a free dumpster day at RFD Station 11, 7105 Mae Anne Avenue, for September 19 and 20, 2026. Both are for residents' own vegetation; grass, bagged material and contractor loads are not accepted.

Typical Mogul jobs

  • Sectional removal of trees between houses
  • Clearance pruning over roofs, driveways and the street
  • Checking trees on slopes and cut banks
  • Defensible space limbing and thinning
  • Stump grinding in small yards

Part of Verdi-Mogul until 2010

Until the 2010 Census, Mogul was counted together with Verdi as one census-designated place. It still shares much with its neighbor, from the I-80 corridor to the green waste day, but the work here looks more like a tight suburban street than a forest lot. Expect a crew that works carefully in small spaces.

Mogul Questions

There's no room to drop my tree. Can it still come down?

Yes. We remove it in sections from the top down, lowering each piece on a rope. It takes longer than felling, which the estimate reflects, but it keeps roofs and fences intact.

Do I need to tell my neighbor before tree work?

It is a good idea if any limbs hang over their yard or the crew needs to stand near the line. We can explain the plan to them on the day if that helps.

How often should trees on the slope behind my house be checked?

Every few years is reasonable, and after any storm that brings down limbs nearby. Look for new leans, exposed roots on the downhill side or cracks in the soil.

Can you grind a stump in a small backyard with a narrow gate?

Usually. Compact stump grinders fit through standard side gates, and we lay down protection on lawns and pavers along the path. Tell us how wide the narrowest point is when you call, and mention any sprinkler lines near the stump so we can avoid them.
