Rural Lots on the Road to Carson

Pleasant Valley is a small unincorporated community in southern Washoe County, at about 4,780 feet, where Interstate 580, US 395 and US 395 Alternate run through and split the valley into east and west halves. Tree Service in Pleasant Valley often looks rural: larger lots, outbuildings and fences to work around, and brush on the slopes above.

The Davis Fire came close

When the Davis Fire broke out on September 7, 2024, Pleasant Valley was among the communities under evacuation orders, which were reduced to warnings on September 10. The fire had started in Davis Creek Regional Park to the south and was pushed by strong regional winds, then by gusts up to 75 mph on September 11. Most Pleasant Valley properties were spared, but the evacuation was a hard reminder of how quickly fire moves through this corridor.

Getting the house ready

The defensible space work we do here follows the zones Reno Fire publishes for the region. In the first five feet, nothing that burns easily, and no branches over the roof. Out to 30 feet, lower limbs raised at least 6 feet and grass kept short. Out to 100 feet, thinned brush and spacing between tree crowns. On a Pleasant Valley lot with a few big cottonwoods or elms and a hillside of sagebrush behind the house, that usually means pruning the trees and thinning the brush, not removing everything.

Big old trees near barns and fences

Older properties here often have large deciduous trees near barns, corrals and fences, planted long before anyone thought about where they would fall. Old cottonwoods and willows grow fast, rot from the inside and drop heavy limbs without much warning. We check for cavities, cracks and dead tops, and we can reduce the weight on limbs over buildings or remove a tree before it lands on one.

Two halves, one valley

Because the highways divide the valley, some properties are reached from the frontage roads on one side and some from the other. When you call, let us know which side you are on and whether trucks can reach the tree. Long driveways and gates matter for chipper access, and Reno Fire's guidance also calls for driveways longer than 150 feet to have room for fire equipment to turn around, which helps us too.

Pleasant Valley work

  • Defensible space pruning and brush thinning
  • Removing dead or hollow cottonwoods and willows
  • Reducing heavy limbs over barns and outbuildings
  • Removal of trees damaged by wind or heat
  • Stump grinding and haul-away

Cleanup and hauling

On rural lots the cleanup can be as big a job as the cutting. We chip limbs on site and either haul the chips away or leave them for you to spread, and big trunk wood can be cut to firewood length if you want it. Those choices go in the written quote so the price matches what you asked for.

Tree Removal in Reno, NV

Pleasant Valley Questions

My cottonwood drops big limbs every few years. Can it be saved?

Often the tree can stay with a pruning that removes dead wood and shortens the heaviest limbs. If the trunk has a large cavity or the main stem is cracked, removal is usually safer, especially near a building.

Can your trucks get to trees behind my barn?

Usually. Tell us about gates, soft ground and driveway length when you call, and we will plan the equipment around it. Some trees are reached by carrying limbs out to the chipper.

Do you leave the wood?

If you want it, yes. We can cut trunk wood to firewood length and stack it, or haul everything away. Either option is written into the quote.

Should I prune my trees before fire season or in winter?

Most deciduous trees prune best in late winter, when they are dormant and the structure is easy to see. Dead wood and defensible space limbing can be done any time, and it is worth getting done before the dry, windy months. We can split a job so the fire work happens first and the structural pruning waits for dormancy.
