Young Landscapes, Long-Term Owners
Spanish Springs is a place where Tree Service is mostly about getting ahead of problems. The valley north of Sparks went from 9,018 people in 2000 to 17,314 in 2020, and Census QuickFacts puts the owner-occupancy rate at 91.9 percent. Most of the trees in these yards went in with the houses. They are now big enough to matter and still young enough to shape, and owners who plan to stay want them to grow into something strong.
From air races to subdivisions
The valley's history is short and recent. Sky Ranch, a dirt airstrip northeast of State Route 445 and Spanish Springs Road, hosted the first Reno Air Races in 1964 and 1965. It closed in 1970 and is now under housing. That means few yards here have the century-old trees found in old Sparks or Reno. What we see instead are landscape trees planted by builders, often species chosen for quick growth, set close to houses and sidewalks with little thought about their mature size.
Structural pruning pays off here
A fifteen-year-old maple or ash with two competing leaders is a split waiting for a windy day. Fixing that now is a short job; fixing it in another fifteen years may mean removing the tree. Our pruning here follows ANSI A300: one dominant leader, well-spaced scaffold limbs, nothing removed that the tree does not need to lose, and no topping. For a block of trees planted at the same time, we can do the whole yard in one visit.
City or county?
Parts of Spanish Springs have been annexed into the City of Sparks, while much of the valley remains unincorporated Washoe County. That affects who you call about a tree along a street or in a common area, and it can affect trash and green waste service. If you live in an HOA neighborhood, check whether the tree is in your lot or in a landscaped common area the association maintains. We are happy to look at a plat or HOA map with you.
Brush and open land
Many Spanish Springs streets back onto open hills covered in sagebrush and rabbitbrush. Truckee Meadows Fire held a free green waste day at Lazy 5 Regional Park, 7100 Pyramid Way, on October 25, 2025, taking woody plants such as junipers, pines, sagebrush and rabbitbrush from Washoe County residents. If your property borders open ground, we can limb up trees and thin shrubs near the house as part of the same visit.
Trees, rock and drip lines
A lot of Spanish Springs yards have traded lawn for rock and drip irrigation over the years. That is a sensible move in a dry valley, but a shade tree that grew up on lawn sprinklers loses most of its water when the turf goes. If you are converting a yard, plan drip emitters out at the tree's drip line, not just at the trunk, and expect the tree to show stress for a season or two. If it is already declining, we can tell you whether pruning out the dead wood will buy it time or whether it is beyond recovery.
What owners here usually ask for
- First structural pruning on builder-planted trees
- Moving or removing trees planted too close to the house
- Removing a tree that has outgrown a small side yard
- Stump grinding before relandscaping or xeriscaping
- Limbing and thinning on lots that border open land

Spanish Springs Questions
My trees are only 15 years old. Do they really need pruning?
That is the ideal age. Correcting a double leader or a crowded set of limbs now is quick and leaves small wounds. Waiting until the tree is twice the size means bigger cuts or, sometimes, removal.
Who is responsible for the trees along my HOA's sidewalk?
It depends on where the trees stand. Trees on your lot are usually yours, while trees in common areas are typically the association's. Check your HOA documents or ask the management company before scheduling work.
Is there a free place to drop brush in Spanish Springs?
Truckee Meadows Fire has held free green waste days at Lazy 5 Regional Park for Washoe County residents. Watch their announcements for dates, and note that grass, bagged material and large stumps are not accepted.
